Man charged after alleged assault of elderly man

Queensland Police have charged a man with grievous bodily harm and a string of other offences after he allegedly assaulted an elderly man in a Brisbane city car park last Friday night.

The man who was allegedly attacked remains in a critical condition with significant head injuries.

Police allege at 9pm on April 21 a 20-year-old man entered an underground carpark on George St where he stole a number of items from two parked cars.

The man then allegedly approached a third car in which a 87-year-old man was sitting and a struggle broke out before the younger man drove forward in the vehicle and the elderly man has fallen from it.

The 20-year-old has then driven off, crashing into the boom gates at the carpark.

The 87-year-old Bethania man was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he remains in a critical condition with significant head injuries.

Detectives located the vehicle at 6pm on April 22, parked at Musgrave Park in South Brisbane.

At 10:30am on Tuesday, police were able to locate the 20-year-old on George St where he was detained and treated for various injuries sustained while he was attempting to flee.

The Mareeba man has been charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm, serious assault over 60, robbery with violence, unlawful use of motor vehicle, dangerous driving, possession of a dangerous drug (methylamphetamine), and unregulated high risk activity. He is also charged with three counts of enter premises and two counts each of receive tainted property and wilful damage.

The man is due to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
