Man at centre of Brisbane siege identified as Adam William Cheal

The man at the centre of a two-suburb, multi-street lockdown in Brisbane on Tuesday has been identified and is due to appear in court on Thursday.

The man at the centre of yesterday’s multi-street lockdown, accused of making explosives and carrying a knife in public, has been identified as Adam William Cheal.

Cheal, 42 from Capalaba, is due to face court on Thursday, after police located a quantity of explosives inside a Hamley St, Wooloowin home on Tuesday.

Suburban streets in two Brisbane suburbs were plunged into lockdown that ended with a suspicious device being detonated by police inside the Wooloowin home.

The incident began when police found the devices at the home about 1pm.

A man is arrested after a PSPA was declared in Coorparoo.

Police then used mobile phone data to track Cheal to Rome St in Coorparoo.

Residents in eight streets in that suburb were subsequently stuck inside their homes as police declared an emergency situation.

“EORT (Explosive Ordnance Response Team) were notified and attended the address whilst police commenced an immediate search of the vicinity for a man alleged to be responsible for the materials,” a statement from police said.

“A electric conductive weapon was also seized.”

Police also seized Cheal’s car

“A subsequent search uncovered items and documentation falsely attributed to various government agencies,” the police statement said.

“Two knives and replica weapons were also uncovered.”

Cheal was transported to hospital for further assessment and has since been charged with one count each of manufacture explosive without authority, authority required to possess explosives, unlawful possession of weapons, possession of a knife in a public place, common assault, carry exposed weapon in a public place, assume designation or description of police officer, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing/acquiring restricted items.
