Palm Beach man Mathew Quick charged after woman in hospital after Elanora State School carpark rage

An ex-ADF member and father-of-two has been charged after an alleged attack in the carpark of a Gold Coast school that left a grandmother with a broken leg and head injury.

Mathew Quick and Cheryle Anderson were allegedly involved in an altercation that turned physical at a Gold Coast dance concert.

A former Australian Defence Force member has been charged after the alleged assault of a grandmother in the carpark at a dance concert on the Gold Coast.

The incident unfolded at the Elanora State School at the weekend which left the woman with a broken leg and a head injury after the allegedly violent carpark scuffle.

Former ADF member and father-of-two Mathew Quick, of Palm Beach, has been charged with assault.

The Courier-Mail has attempted to contact Mr Quick for comment.

The victim of the alleged assault has been identified as Elanora grandmother Cheryle Anderson, 63, whose family said was still in hospital recovering.

Ms Anderson was at the school to watch her grandchildren in the “Little Groovers” dance concert.

She told 7 News she didn’t see it coming.

She said had arrived at the recital to watch her five-year-old grand-daughter when she accidentally “tapped” the Toyota Hilux parked next to hers, causing a minor ding.

“I said ‘I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean it, I didn’t mean it’,” she said.

“He said, ‘oh, you owe me $50 for that’. I said ‘$50 for that?’. I said ‘look, the concert’s starting in 15 minutes, can we just sort this out later’. He said ‘no, I want it now’.”

Ms Anderson said she started away before she was allegedly assaulted.

“Next thing I knew, I was on the ground.”

Ms Anderson said she may need a knee reconstruction as a result of the incident.

Gold Coast police Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said the “astounding” incident unfolded as the woman was opening her car door.

It accidentally hit the vehicle parked beside her, causing “very minor damage”.

Supt Hanlon said the 43-year-old male driver of the other vehicle then allegedly got into an argument with the woman and pushed her to the ground, leaving her with head injuries.

It’s understood police will allege Mr Quick kicked at the woman with a sweeping motion and threw her to the ground.

In an update on Monday morning, Supt Hanlon revealed Ms Andrerson was attending the dance concert to watch her grandchildren perform.

He told a media conference the incident was “unacceptable”.

“We just want to let everyone know that violence is not the solution to the problem that you are having,” he said.

“It will not be tolerated ... and we will do everyone we can to hold these people to account.

“... This woman, for no particular reason, has been hit, fallen over, sustained a head injury and also a broken leg, allegedly as a direct result of the poor actions and the violent actions of another person. It’s unacceptable.”

She was taken to Robina Hospital and “luckily she’s OK”.

Mathew Quick, of Palm Beach, was charged after an alleged scuffle at a Gold Coast carpark.

Mr Quick was arrested and will face Coolangatta Magistrates Court next month charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.

The woman’s daughter posted a photo of the alleged offender in the school carpark to a Facebook community page, calling for witnesses to assist the police investigation.
