A woman had to be hospitalised and five other people struggled to breathe when a man allegedly released a poisonous cough mixture into a crowded shopping centre last weekend.

Police on Friday confirmed they have since charged an Eagleby man in relation to the incident in Logan.

Detectives say the man allegedly released the poisonous chemical via a spray aerosol into the Eagleby Shopping Plaza about 1.15pm on June 19.

Officers allege the man attended the Fryar Road shops at Eagleby where he would within moments release the noxious aerosol substance while standing next to a cafe and a medical centre near the entry to the Plaza.

“The substance caused six people to experience adverse respiratory reactions, resulting in a 54 year-old-woman being transported to hospital,” a Queensland Police Service statement said.

Three crews from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) also attended the Plaza, where they conducted atmospheric testing to determine the safety of the area.

They were called to the ‘hazardous gas incident’ about 1.30pm.

According to a spokeswoman from QFES, there was a specific odour when crews arrived, however the air levels detected when testing the centre were not unsafe.

Several days after the incident, a 36-year-old Eagleby man’s house, nearby to the shopping Plaza, was stormed by detectives who executed a search warrant.

The man was arrested and has since been charged with five counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count each of serious assault of a person over 60, administering poison with intent to harm, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing drug utensils.

He is scheduled to appear at the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on July 14.
