An elderly man who was hospitalised after an alleged hit and run incident involving a stolen car south of Brisbane says he could have died and is lucky to be alive.
Stanley Parkes, 79, was driving his Subaru Impreza to the supermarket to pick up milk and cereal when he was hit by a Haval Jolion on Altair Street near Juers Street at Kingston about 5.10pm on Wednesday.
The occupants of the Haval, a man and a woman, allegedly fled the scene through a bush and have not yet been found.
Police allege the Haval was stolen from a Coopers Plains address on May 6.
Mr Parkes said he saw the “hoons” run two red lights but couldn’t do much about it as they were driving at a “high speed”.
“I had seen the car coming but I thought they were a long way off and they just hit the accelerator,” he said.
“It would have killed me for sure, because they tore the whole front of my car off. It’s just really ridiculous.”
Mr Parkes was rushed to Logan Hospital with a head injury.
“I’m lucky I’m still alive. I’ve got to thank God for that,” he said.
“The back of my head is still sore. I was at the hospital from 6pm until 5.30am.”
Mr Parkes said he saw the two people leave the car halfway up the hill before running through the bushes.
Kristee Heyden was walking her dogs when she saw the crash occur. Ms Heyden said she was shocked to see two people leave the scene.
“They didn’t even bother to see if the other person was okay or even alive,” she said.
“We were on the corner of that street where he was trying to turn, and the car had gone through a set of lights at high speed, and he was the collateral damage of it.”
Ms Heyden said she rushed to Mr Parkes to try and help.
“I got him to sit down on his passenger side seat, and I noticed that he was bleeding from the back of his head,” she said.
“I got him to put pressure at the back of his head while he was bleeding and I kept asking questions, making sure he was still alert and conscious and still able to have that.”
Since the incident Ms Heyden has created a GoFundMe for Mr Parkes’ car that he had recently bought has been written off.
The two also reunited on Thursday.
“I was just thinking of my own grandparents, I was just, I can’t believe this has happened to this poor old, elderly man, and he doesn’t deserve that,” Ms Hayden said.
“Especially the fact that he’s been hit by a car that wasn’t his fault.
“He’s just left in a really bad situation.”
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
Police are still searching for the two allegedly involved and officers are appealing to anyone who may have information to come forward.
