A police station has been evacuated after a suspicious backpack was dumped at the front counter.

Officers and staff at Logan Central Police Station were told to evacuate the building after a person dropped the bag before running out of the station on Civic Rd at 10.30am.

Police made an emergency declaration and set up an exclusion zone which has since been revoked.

Staff from the Logan Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre, who share the building with the police station, were also evacuated.

Police assistant district officer Peter Miles said the suspect package was located by a member of the public who brought it to the front counter of the police station.

He said the device contained electronics and batteries and was wrapped in black tape.

Officers from the explosive ordnance response team attended, determining the device contained no explosive material.

Further investigations were being conducted to identify who may be responsible for the device.

Police say a person put a backpack on the front counter of the station and left the scene.

The police station is less than 2km away from where a bucket bomb exploded in the backyard of a 52-year-old man’s property last Thursday.

Detectives believe the device – that was concealed in a Bunnings bucket – was planted in a targeted attack on the man, who was seriously injured in the explosion off Jacaranda Ave about 5.30pm.

Local resident Georgia Denny said she was very concerned about what’s happening in the local area.

“It’s so scary and people around here are really on edge. Things like this don’t usually happen here

“It’s scary to think there was bomb activity and we are wondering if this is a connected incident or if there’s more to come. I’m scared for me and my family”

Farhan Waseem, an employee of Spar convenience store which was within a declared exclusion zone, said today’s incident was alarming.

“I am really worried because I work here, I have to come here every day”

“A lot of people live here so we need to make sure our customers are ok coming into our shops.”

“I’ve never seen or heard anything like this. It’s ridiculous to me that in this country we’re looking for this stuff now.”

A local cab driver for the Kingston area said she was concerned about recent events.

“I have had a lot of jobs today but from private places, usually I get a lot of people at the station but it’s just dead empty.

“As a resident I am very concerned and it’s a bit scary it’s usually not like this here.”
