A man convicted of possessing hundreds of horrific child exploitation images and making several child pornography and bestiality videos claims he’s not a paedophile, he was just being “stupid”.
Kelvin Paul Lowe, 51, faced the Brisbane District Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to five counts of bestiality, three counts of possessing child exploitation material (CEM), one count of making CEM and one count of indecently treating children aged under 12 and 16.
Crown Prosecutor Zachary Kaplan told the court that during March 2020, Mr Lowe visited a public pool at Caboolture where he secretly filmed underaged girls.
“He had a keyhole waterproof camera he discreated down his pants, the lens of which were protruding from his boardshorts which allowed him to film underwater,” Mr Kaplan said.
The court heard that on one particular day, Mr Lowe approached a nine-year-old girl and asked her to perform tricks like handstands and front flips for him, which she did.
He then asked her to play a game with him where they took turns swimming between each others legs while he continued to film with the hidden underwater camera.
During the ‘game’ Mr Lowe also blew bubbles at the girls “vaginal region,” the court heard.
Mr Kaplan said at one point during his interaction with the young girl, her swimmer bottoms became wedged and Mr Lowe reached and pulled on them.
The girls’ mother learned of the incident and reported it to police.
Officers then executed a search warrant at Mr Lowes Caboolture home where they uncovered a plethora of CEM, including up to 30 minutes of footage of the young girl at the pool and various other videos taken of “a number” of different children at swimming pools and in hotel rooms.
Two more waterproof cameras were seized, along with Mr Lowe’s computer which had organised files containing more than 450 “highly serious” child pornography images and 52 child prognography videos.
Among the files were five deleted videos of Mr Lowe engaging in explicit sexual acts with a dog, including him forcing the dog to lick and penetrate his own anus.
The handful of videos which were made sometime between February 9, 2017 and April 28, 2019, also show Mr Lowe squeezing the dogs’ genitalia, as well as masturbating both himself and the dog.
He was subsequently arrested and released on bail.
But despite the immense amount of evidence uncovered from Mr Lower’s Caboolture home, he has denied that he is attracted to young girls, telling police his behaviour was “stupid,” “dumb,” and acted on out of “curiosity.”
He has also denied knowing any of the children found on his computer or to masturbating over any of the content.
Mr Kaplan told the court the Crown did not accept this denial, saying it demonstrated a “significant lack of insight” into his offending.
The court heard Mr Lowe did not undertake any psychological or medical examination regarding his predatory behaviour and had not been diagnosed with any mental health issues in connection with his offending.
His defence counsel Robert Glenday also revealed that Lowe did not take it upon himself to seek any type of counselling regarding behaviour since his arrest.
Mr Glenday told the court that the offending had been “out of character” and Lowe was “embarrassed” and “remorseful” of his actions.
However, Judge Brad Farr firmly disagreed saying Mr Lowe’s offending was brazen, premeditated, and “downright creepy.”
“You demonstrably have an interest in children, you’re just not obligated to admit it,” Judge Farr said.
“When questioned, you told police that your decision to behave in this way was stupid and a dumb choice.
“Your behaviour on that occasion (at the pool) was premeditated, it was predatory, it was downright creepy.”
Judge Farr said Mr Lowe’s repetitive, “disgusting” behaviour warranted a prison sentence as he was a “potential menace to children.”
He was sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment with parole eligibility on May 28, 2023.
