A former journalist who police allege was plotting a terror attack in the Bundaberg region is being assessed on his fitness to instruct his lawyers.
James Michael Waugh was charged in 2020 with one count of act in preparation for, or planning a, terrorist attack.
Police allege extremist documents were found at his home during a raid by counter terrorism officers in November 2020.
Police allege an electronic device seized during the raid contained documents indicating a desire to undertake acts of violent extremism.
Waugh’s case was mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday morning.
“We‘re seeking to adjourn the matter to mid August to allow for completion of a psychiatric assessment regarding the issue of fitness to instruct,” his lawyer Daniel Hua said.
Magistrate Robbie Davies adjourned the case to August 19.
Waugh is currently being held at the Park, a secure mental health facility.
