A young Brisbane man has faced court for the first time and admitted to accessing violent extremist material, before telling a magistrate that specialist detectives are also looking to lay “further terrorism charges” against him.

Jack Dinon, 25, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Arrests Court on Tuesday to one count of possessing or controlling violent extremist material using a carriage service.

The specifics of the charge are that Dinon had control of violent extremist material held on a computer at his family’s home in Morningside on March 24.

Dinon, who represented himself in Brisbane Arrests Court on Tuesday, then asked the magistrate, unprompted, if she was aware that he is “facing further terrorism charges”.

“The investigation is still ongoing and I had a phone call yesterday with the detective who is leading the investigation … [I’m facing] firearms [charges], further possession of extremist material, as well as others [potential offences] that I’m not sure about,” Dinon said.

“Well if they serve you the papers, tell them you will be in court on August 2 and have them put those charges to August 2 as well,” the magistrate replied.

Dinon was charged on July 8 by the Queensland Police Service’s Security Investigations Team, which is also continuing to investigate him for further potential offences.

At one point during Tuesday’s proceeding, Dinon told the court that he is currently homeless, but when the case was heard again later in the day, he said his parents had agreed for him to live at the family home in Morningside in Brisbane’s inner-south until the current matters are finalised.

Dinon was visibly frustrated in court with one of his bail conditions being that he has to report to Brisbane City Police Station on Mary Street every day.

“Can I get my bail denied and go to remand [in custody], your Honour?” he asked.

“No, there is no need for that yet,” the magistrate responded.

Dinon is due to be sentenced for the current Commonwealth offence in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on August 2.
