The Murder of Sian Kingi

The following is a transcript of a conversation between convicted rapist and murderer Barrie Watts and his accomplice Valmae Beck after they were arrested for killing schoolgirl Sian Kingi.

WATTS: Well I’m not confessing to something that I never done. Have you confessed to something that you have done, have you?

BECK: What.

WATTS: Have you confessed?

BECK: We are both going to jail.

WATTS: Have you confessed or not?

BECK: It doesn’t matter whether I have confessed or not.

WATTS: Have you or haven’t you?

BECK: You want what?

WATTS: I was not there.

BECK: You was not there.

WATTS: No.

BECK: Phew. Man oh man, you are going to drag this on for months and months and months and months. We’ve got no chance of getting out of it.

WATTS: No, they are saying bullshit.

BECK: We’re been crucified.

WATTS: Bull fuck, have...

BECK: Your, you’ve been picked out. I’ve even seen your bloody picture upstairs.

WATTS: Thanks Val. Top wife.

BECK: What?

WATTS: You’ve turned into a top wife.

BECK: We’re going to jail for life Barrie.

WATTS: You’ve turned into a really nice wife.

BECK: What?

WATTS: You have turned into a really really staunch wife.

BECK: I’ve turned into what?

WATTS: A real good wife, good loving wife. Giving your husband, fucking, putting your husband straight into a murder rap. That’s what you have done.

BECK: What about me?

WATTS: Well leave me out of it.

BECK: I can’t leave you out of it Barrie.

WATTS: You weren’t there, you would, you leave me out of it. I haven’t murdered anyone. So you have changed your statement and everything.

BECK: How can you honestly expect to win this, when we were twice at Noosa on that day – our number plate was taken…

WATTS: There’s no disputing.

BECK: Do you know, do you know that they have been looking for us for two weeks and the only reason that they didn’t catch us was because they couldn’t track us down, it took them longer to track us down as the car wasn’t in your name.

WATTS: They are fucking lying to you.

BECK: Oh, they’ve been in touch with your bloody father. They have been in touch with my sister. How did … how did they find my sister?

WATTS: I know they have.

BECK: They have been in touch with the estate agent.

WATTS: I know they have.

BECK: Well how the bloody heck do they know then?

WATTS: They know we were in the park. I told them and you told them. We were there in the park.

BECK: You did not. You told them you were in bloody Melbourne.

WATTS: Oh two seconds. I told them I was in the park and left four minutes before the girl got there.

BECK: Oh man…

WATTS: You left…

BECK: You wait until you see some of the statements upstairs.

REDACTED PARTS.

BECK: While I’ve been locked up in these cells, I’ve … in the cell the other night and I’ve come so close to breaking a can open and cutting me wrists because I knew that we will never walk outside in the daylight again. We had no way of beating this.

WATTS: Fucking.

BECK: No one to help us.

WATTS: Crap.

BECK: And nobody in this wide world was going to believe us.

REDACTED PARTS.

WATTS: They won’t investigate anymore. All they will have to do is talk to you. You would betray your own husband, your own love.

BECK: All I have kept thinking about is how I was going to live without you. These detectives are going to bloody make sure you … you bloody go to jail for life and that you will never walk the streets again.

WATTS: And that’s what is going to happen.

BECK: Hey.

WATTS: That’s what you want.

BECK: That’s what’s going to happen to both of us. All because of a stupid obsession.

WATTS: Ha ha. Don’t mention it anymore. Don’t talk about it. I never done it, alright.

BECK: Don’t talk about it.

WATTS: They’ve got tape recorders and things here.

BECK: If I didn’t love you why did I go along with what you fuckin’ did.

WATTS: I didn’t do anything.

BECK: All right, why did I do what I did?

WATTS: You didn’t do anything either, you were delirious.

BECK: I’m mentally unbalanced too.

WATTS: You confessed to something that you didn’t do.

BECK: What?

WATTS: You confessed to something that you didn’t do.

REDACTED PARTS

BECK: You can plead insanity. They know you drink a lot. They know that you lose track when you are drunk. I told them that.

WATTS: Lose track of what?

BECK: What?

WATTS: Lose track of what?

BECK: That you don’t remember things when you are drunk.

WATTS: I do.

BECK: Oh Jesus Christ, you don’t.

WATTS: I’m not fucking off tap.

BECK: Honey, you know that and I know that but nobody else knows it. How many other people in this world can fool psychiatrists? I can’t…

WATTS: I am not pleading fucking insanity. I am fucking pleading not guilty.

BECK: If you plead not guilty you will be found guilty. You have not got a leg to stand on. Can you believe … believe in it. I even changed and I told them you fucking didn’t even have … (slippers) I told them you had your rubber thongs on that day, because they found footprints in the fucking river bank and they asked me if you had your runners on and I said no, I said slippers. You can fucking plead insanity.

WATTS: Did you tell them everything we done?

BECK: If you just listen to me you will get out of it. I won’t but you will.

WATTS: If you hadn’t betrayed me we would have fucking got away with it.

BECK: Oh yeah, we would have got away with it alright.

WATTS: The only time.

BECK: The first time they got our car.

WATTS: No listen here, just listen to me, the only way they could convict us was with a confession and you have given them a confession, a fucking 38-page statement, what you know, without that they would never have got a conviction.

BECK: What’s that prove?

WATTS: They could not have with a, without, they had to have.

BECK: No jury in this land would have found us innocent. You know it and I know it.

WATTS: Bullshit bullshit bullshit.

BECK: Oh come on, be realistic.

WATTS: No one seen us pick her up and throw her in the car, no one seen her in the car, and no one seen us kill her.

BECK: Oh yeah right, that’s why they have got our fucking rego number, they’ve been looking for us for two weeks.

REDACTED PARTS

BECK: Do you feel like you’re in a nightmare?

WATTS: Yeah. Our lives are over.

BECK: Pardon.

WATTS: Our lives are over.

BECK: How many times did I say to you ‘did you think our lives were worth the trouble’ and you said, ‘it’ll be alright’. Nobody will ever see us. And you had to do it in broad daylight. Broad fucking daylight. Do you know what the detectives told me last night?

WATTS: What?

BECK: That you were the most sadistic, cold-hearted person they’d ever met in their life. They reckoned that you loved every minute of TV cameras, that you were having the time of your life, that’s why you didn’t hide your face, because you were mad. Completely insane. Do you know I’m shaking so much? I’m trembling from head to foot. I can’t stop. I’ve never been so frightened in all my life as I am now, hey.

WATTS: Am I really a madman?

BECK: Pardon.

WATTS: Am I really a madman?

BECK: A madman.

WATTS: Mmm. A psychopath, very … insane.

BECK: Yeh.

WATTS: I am.

BECK: You’re off tap, yeh.

WATTS: Fair dinkum. How long have you known that?

BECK: Pardon.

WATTS: How long have you known that?

BECK: I kept thinking that there was something wrong but I thought you’d get over it. I thought it was all just talk. Since we’ve been in Queensland I seen a different side of you, a side of you that I never knew existed. Most times when you hit me, when you beat me up so bad. You hurt me so much. It shocked me so much. I just couldn’t believe that you’d do it to me. And then going out raping somebody is one thing, but to kill somebody in cold blood and not have any compassion at all. That worried me, it’s been worrying me for weeks and weeks since it happened. Because you told me that it wouldn’t bother ya, but I thought it would.

WATTS: Did it?

BECK: Nuh, haven’t bothered you in the slightest.

WATTS: I’d like to do it again.

BECK: Pardon.

WATTS: I’d like to do it again.

BECK: You want to?

WATTS: Um.

BECK: You see. And then you tell me you don’t want to plead insanity.

WATTS: But you wanted to as well.

BECK: What?

WATTS: You wanted to, as well. You wanted to do it again.

BECK: Do you know what I keep thinking about?

WATTS: Nuh.

BECK: Saturday afternoon. Before you went to sleep.

WATTS: Uh huh.

BECK: As long as I live I will remember Saturday afternoon. Probably my last thoughts when we were arrested on Saturday. All they did was tell me the same thing. They said we’ve known, we’ve known for a couple of weeks that it was him, it’s just taken us time to track him down., believe you me he’s a free man but at five o’clock on Saturday afternoon he’ll never see freedom again, and we’ll make sure of that. They’re determined to friggin lock you up for life, if they couldn’t get the death penalty in time. They’re pushing for the death penalty.
