A Brisbane teacher has faced court accused of inappropriately touching a student earlier this year.

Liam Joel Bromilow, 38, faced Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with common assault.

Police will allege the Deebing Heights resident assaulted a teenage girl in March, 2024.

It’s understood Mr Bromilow was working as sports co-ordinator at Hymba Yumba independent School (HYIS) at Springfield when the allegations arose.

The mother of the girl, who cannot be identified to protect the child’s identity, previously told The Courier-Mail that she blamed the school for “failing” their duty of care.

She claimed the school did not report the incident immediately to police, and that she was told after two months of independent investigations that there was not enough evidence to say the teacher had done anything wrong.

HYIS said the complaint was responded to swiftly and that the teacher involved was stood down on full pay pending an independent investigation on April 3.

“The staff member has been on leave from the school and will not return to school while the court process is underway,” the school said.

At the matter’s first mention on August 28, Mr Bromilow’s defence counsel requested a short adjournment.

The matter was adjourned to September 18, and Mr Bromilow was granted bail.

Mr Bromilow declined to comment on the allegations outside court.
