A Gold Coast energy healer who allegedly skipped bail before his rape trial and was extradited from Thailand will remain in custody until at least next month, a court has heard.

Helio Taiyang Matahari – who also uses the last name Richardson – appeared in the Brisbane Arrest Court on Saturday to face two charges.

Matahari was dressed in khaki prison garb and sat emotionless in the dock as his solicitor Terry O’Gorman told Magistrate Louise Shepherd that he did not require the charges to be read.

“He is aware of what is going on,” Mr O’Gorman said of his client.

“No application for bail is made at this stage.”

Matahari, 62, was due to face a four-day trial for rape and eleven counts of sexual assault in June 2022 but failed to turn up for a pre-trial hearing in 2021.

In court on Saturday Senior Sergeant Bill Heasley said that he was offering no evidence for the charge of failing to appear, due to a technical error.

Sgt Heasley said that the second charge, of breach of bail, remained valid and Matahari was alleged to have breached a condition of his bail to reside at a particular address.

Magistrate Shepherd adjourned the case to the Brisbane Magistrates Court summary call-over list on October 9, and Matahari is not required to appear in person.

A hearing in relation to the bench arrest warrant for Matahari which was issued in May will return to court on a date to be fixed.
