A 33-year-old man grabbed his victim by the throat before smashing several windows with bricks and causing more than $4000 in damage.

Terence Luke John Hardy was drinking at a Coolum address on August 6 when a conversation about his late father led him to attack another man known to him.

Police prosecutor Stuart Lydford told Maroochydore Magistrates Court Hardy grabbed the victim around the throat.

Sergeant Lydford said the victim was able to push free of Hardy and lock himself inside his house.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard Hardy started pulling on a locked sliding door before throwing several concrete bricks through five of the victim’s windows.

Hardy and the victim fought in the backyard before the 33-year-old left the scene.

Sergeant Lydford said Hardy appeared to be intoxicated when police found him a couple of streets away.

The victim’s $699 TV was damaged by one of the bricks.

Sergeant Lydford said it would cost an additional $3478.20 to repair the sliding door and broken windows.

He suggested community service, probation or fines as an appropriate punishment.

Hardy pleaded guilty to two counts of wilful damage on Monday.

Duty lawyer Rachel Holland said a disagreement over the selling of his father's possessions led to Hardy’s behaviour.

Ms Holland said the renderer had a bottle of rum smashed over his head and was shot by an air gun during the dispute.

She said the behaviour was very out of character for Hardy who was finding it “extremely difficult” since his father’s death.

Ms Holland said Hardy had plans to start his own removal business and asked Magistrate Rod Madsen not to record a conviction.

Mr Madsen noted Hardy had only one other entry on his criminal record that occurred shortly after his father’s passing.

He placed Hardy on a $1500 good behaviour bond for 18 months and directed the restitution to SPER.

“Hopefully you’re well supported by family and doctors to make sure this doesn’t continue because if it does continue I suppose the sympathy of the court might quickly be running out,” Mr Madsen said.

A conviction was not recorded.
