A 20-year-old Gold Coast man has had his charge upgraded to murder following the death of a man stabbed at Moorooka in Brisbane’s south last month.

It’s alleged a 33-year-old Moorooka man suffered critical stab wounds following an altercation at a Lyon Street apartment complex at 8.30pm on May 20.

Police will allege Aaron Smith, 20, repeatedly stabbed the man in the abdomen and throat.

Police rendered first aid at the scene before the 33-year-old was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition, where he has since died as a result of his injuries.

Smith was taken into custody at the scene and subsequently charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

Following the 33-year-old’s death, Smith was charged with one count each of murder.

Smith, who is unemployed, also is charged with unlawful possession of a knife with a single-handed blade release, which is a Category M weapon.

He was remanded in custody on Tuesday.

The case will be mentioned again on June 20, when Smith will appear via video link, while remanded in custody.

Detectives from Upper Mount Gravatt Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) have established Operation Uniform Pint as investigations continue.

Police are urging anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward.
