The family and friends of Tjay Doeblien, who was shot dead by police at the weekend, are raising funds for the cost of his funeral.
Tjay’s mother has turned to the public for help to fund her son’s funeral, after he raised a firearm at police on Sunday afternoon and was subsequently shot dead in the moments that followed.
His family say had they been at the scene, they may have been able to prevent his death.
“This could of (sic) been prevented and today we would have my son,” Tjay’s mother wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to cover funeral expenses.
The woman believes if Tjay’s family were able to talk with him before he made the decision to aim a gun at police, the situation may have been avoided.
“Any one of us could have easily changed this situation,” she wrote.
Tjay refused to drop his weapon when police attended a disturbance in Earnest Street in One Mile around 11:15am on Sunday. Police declared a Public Safety and Preservation Act (PSPA) and instructed residents to stay away during the unfolding siege situation.
The father-of-three, who had just celebrated his 27th birthday, had moments earlier had an argument with his partner, prompting the police response.
Upon arrival at the scene, police allege they were threatened by an armed Tjay, before they were forced to fire multiple shots at him around 12.30pm.
He died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics.
The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the actions of police, as is standard in all police involved shootings.
Tjay’s mother has detailed her heartbreak over her son’s death as she told of her “young man with a heart of gold.”
“He leaves everyone he knew with wonderful memories of what an amazing person he was,” she wrote.
While a friend of Tjay’s family, Kerri Collins said Tjay “needs to be laid to rest respectfully.”
“This is costly,” Ms Collins said.
“If you can help Tjay's Family in any way to do this, it would be greatly appreciated.”
