The owner of three allegedly unregistered dogs, which mauled a Maryborough mum to death, is facing multiple charges over the horror attack.
George Cooksley’s three Pitbull cross dogs savaged Amanada Carmichael at a Milton St home she was visiting in June last year.
The 49-year-old is being prosecuted by the Fraser Coast Regional Council for alleged breaches of local animal safety laws.
He faces 11 charges including relevant person must ensure dog does not attack or cause fear/cause death or grievous bodily harm, three charges of owner must ensure cat or dog is implanted, one charge of undertaking a prescribed activity without current approval granted by the local government, three charges of failing to desex an animal as required and three charges of failing to register dog in relevant local government area.
The case sent shockwaves across the Fraser Coast and the timing of the related court date comes just days after the similarly chilling fatal mauling of Energex worker Kane Minion at a Greenback home.
Investigations into that attack are ongoing but both dogs – a Bandog Bullmastiff and Rhodesian ridgeback cross – have since been destroyed.
In Mr Cooksley’s case, he surrendered his dogs on the day of the attack and all three were destroyed that night.
It’s understood Ms Carmichael suffered serious bites to her neck, chest and arm.
People at the home attempted to help and emergency services attended the scene but were unable to save her.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, her mother Bonnie Carmichael remembered her daughter as someone who was “very kind and caring” and loved by her daughter and brother, Anthony.
“She loved life,” she said
“She would do anything for anybody.”
The Fraser Coast council first revealed in May this year that it was taking legal action against the owner of the dogs but at the time no further details were revealed.
Mr Cooksley’s details and the list of charges were confirmed by this publication on Friday.
The council was contacted for more information on its case but declined to comment.
Speaking to reporters in the days following the attack, Mayor George Seymour described it as a “horrific event” and “tragedy for the Fraser Coast and for Maryborough”.
He also alleged at the time the dogs were unregistered and the owner should not have had three of them as local laws limited the number allowed per home to two.
Mr Cooksley will appear in court next week.
