Gateway Mwy motorist pulled over by alleged fake cop

A man will face court after he allegedly used a fake police badge and claimed to be a Federal police officer while pulling over a car on the Gateway Motorway.

A man who allegedly used a fake police badge and claimed to be a Federal police officer while pulling over a car on the Gateway Motorway could face two years behind bars if found guilty of his alleged crimes.

The man, 41 from Tingalpa, is accused of impersonating an Australian Federal Police officer when he allegedly pulled over the car on the Gateway Mwy on February 17.

Using a fake police badge, the man allegedly told the male driver he would face court action, according to police.

The AFP were alerted to the incident only after the driver raised the alarm, prompting a thorough investigation into the matter.

The man was charged with one count of impersonating a Commonwealth Public Official and is due to face court Friday morning.

AFP Acting Commander Helen Schneider said the charge was a reminder of the seriousness of the alleged offending.

“Impersonating Commonwealth officials and the potential misuse of fake police identification is something we take very seriously, which is reflected in our investigation of the alleged incident,” she said.

“Falsely representing yourself as any kind of law enforcement or Commonwealth official is a genuine danger to public safety. Incidents like this will be investigated by police, and people convicted of these offences could face time in prison.

If guilty, the maximum penalty for the offence carries a two year imprisonment.
