A teenager has been caught going 50km over the speed limit.

A teenager has been busted travelling at 50km over the speed limit just metres away from where another teen was killed in a horror crash earlier in 2022.

Fraser Coast Anglican College sporting and house captain Brody Smith was killed in a horror crash at Tuan Forest while travelling with mates to Tin Can Bay on Friday, September 30, for the long weekend.

The crash came just weeks after his formal was held at the Beach House Hotel in Hervey Bay, celebrating the end of his school years.

On November 6, about 11.10am, an 18-year-old man was stopped by police after he was found to be travelling at 150km/h in a 100km/h zone on Maryborough-Cooloola Road at Tuan Forest.

The P-plate driver, an 18-year-old Fraser Coast man, was fined $1653, issued 8 demerit points and now faces a six-month high speed suspension.

When the driver was questioned about his speed, he offered no reason for his actions and admitted to being aware of a recent fatal crash in the area.

Inspector Paul Algie said the incident was very concerning for police.

“This is the area where we tragically lost the life of a young man who was on his way to some post school camping trips in Tin Can Bay and within a couple of months we’re already detecting people travelling 50km/h over the speed limit,” he said.

“This is a really good reminder to everybody that every kilometre over is a killer.

“We are losing lives on these roads and when we have to intercept people doing these speeds, writing a ticket, that’s the minimum.

“The worst thing that can happen is that you lose your life and someone loses a son or a daughter and the community loses a valuable person.”
