Fourteen-year-old charged after teen dies in alleged stolen car crash

A fourteen-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter after a serious crash which killed one teen and injured five others.

Police have charged a boy following a fatal crash in Cairns where a teenage boy died and five others were significantly injured.

It is alleged the Cairns teens went for a joy ride in an allegedly stolen car before

colliding with a tree near Saltwater Creek on Monday morning about 1.10am.

A 2010 white Toyota Yaris hatchback was sighted several times in the area before the driver lost control of the vehicle while travelling south on Pease Street.

All six teens inside the car were injured, and while police and paramedics performed CPR on the 14-year-old passenger, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The alleged driver was taken to Cairns Hospital for treatment, while four other teenage passengers- girls aged 12, 15 and 15 and a 14-year-old boy – were also transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 14-year-old driver has been charged with manslaughter. He has also been charged with three counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and one count each of burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.

Police will also allege the boy entered a residence on Gatton Street at Manunda, stole the keys to the car and drove off earlier the same night.

He has been denied bail and will appear in Cairns Children’s Court this week.

Another boy, aged 14, was also charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and burglary relating to the same incident.

He appeared in Cairns Children’s Court on Tuesday.
