FNQ police help eight children escape from large croc

Police have rushed to the rescue of eight children after they climbed to safety out of floodwater in which a crocodile believed to be larger than five metres was seen approaching them.

Eight children caught in floodwater have been rescued after climbing to safety from a crocodile believed to be larger than five metres in Far North Queensland on Saturday.

Police were called to assist in the rescue of eight children aged between 11 and 14 in Kowanyama after they had been playing near a tree located about 200m from the bank when one saw a crocodile approaching.

The children climbed to safety and yelled for help.

Police, with the assistance of a local man, reached the children and carried them to safety.

Police spotted the crocodile several times throughout the rescue and believed it to be in excess of five metres.
