Douglas Brian Jackway avoids jail after injecting woman with drugs while on strict supervision order

A violent and dangerous paedophile has avoided being sent back to jail despite contravening his strict release order by helping a woman inject drugs.

Senior cop's warning to pedophiles: "We are coming for you"

A violent and dangerous paedophile who injected a woman with drugs less than one month after being released from prison on a strict supervision order has avoided being sent back to jail.

Douglas Brian Jackway, 45, was released from jail onto a 15-year supervision order in December last year.

He was released to live at the Wacol precinct that houses sex offenders and was subject to dozens of release conditions including that he be under a 24-hour curfew, wear a GPS tracker, submit to drug testing and not have contact with children under 16.

But less than one month after his release, Jackway admitted to helping a woman inject drugs during an unauthorised visit to the precinct, in violation of his release conditions.

In July, Jackway pleaded guilty to contravening his release order and was convicted and fined $1500.

The offending prompted a Supreme Court review of his release order on Monday before Justice Peter Applegarth who considered submissions a number of psychiatric reports.

“(One psychiatrist) considered it positive that after this lapse in judgment the respondent didn’t use drugs himself despite access to and the option to self-administer,” Justice Applegarth said.

He said another psychiatrist reported Jackway had “acted recklessly” by taking part in the offending but said it was positive he had not also taken drugs.

The judge said it was agreed by the parties that Jackway should be allowed to continue on the supervision order as per the original release conditions.

Jackway, was previously a prime suspect in the murder of Daniel Morcombe, once threatened to cut the throat of a nine-year-old boy after he was caught in the act of raping him.

He has spent nearly all of his adult life in prison and was released despite psychiatrists warning that he displayed “prominent psychopathic traits”.

Jackway’s release in December sparked widespread outrage from people including Daniel’s father Bruce Morcombe who said he was shocked someone with Jackway’s history could be deemed suitable for release.

“He is definitely the worst of the worst,” Mr Morcombe said at the time.

“He is not a groomer of young people – he’s not a paedophile that grooms kids – he is one of the most violent paedophiles in Australia.”

Prison sources also slammed the decision to release Jackway in December with one officer saying he was “the worst I’ve seen in my career”.

“He’s just a predator,” the officer said at the time.

“You have your paedophiles – but he is a violent paedophile.”

“It makes him so dangerous.”
