Domestic violence Qld: Permanent victims’ commissioner appointed

Queensland has fallen into line with other states with the appointment of a permanent independent advocate for victims.

A 'great deal' that businesses can do to tackle domestic violence

Queensland’s first victims’ commissioner will be domestic violence specialist and social justice champion Beck O’Connor, known for her work at the helm of DVConnect.

Ms O’Connor will take on the newly created role on July 29 for a five-year term, taking over from interim victims’ commissioner and former detective Jon Rouse.

The appointment of an independent advocate for victims of crime was one of the recommendations of the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce and will bring Queensland into line with other states.

“The Queensland government (should) establish a victims’ commission as an independent statutory office to promote and protect the needs of victims of all violent offences,” the recommendation said.

“The commissioner will be authorised to exercise the rights of victims, upon their request and with consent, including in relation to their interactions with police, other government agencies and the courts.”

Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath said a national search had been undertaken to find the right person for the job.

“There was an exhaustive search and selection process for this position, and Ms O’Connor is eminently qualified for the role,” she said.

“I have no doubt she will have the trust and respect of all Queenslanders.”

“Ms O’Connor’s experience as CEO of DVConnect and Victim Connect gives her valuable insight into the support victims of crime need.

“She has dedicated her life to standing up for victims of crime and ensuring their voices are heard.”

Ms O’Connor has long been an advocate for victims, including across health, mental health, child protection and social and disability support sectors.

She is currently the chief executive officer of DVConnect/Victim Connect, as well as co-chair of the Independent Ministerial Advisory Council, deputy managing director of the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation and a founding member of the National Lived Experience Advisory Council for the Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commission.

“Being appointed as the first Victims’ Commissioner is both a privilege and a profound responsibility,” Ms O’Connor said.

“I am deeply committed to elevating the voices and concerns of those with lived experiences, ensuring our systems prioritise the rights and recovery of victim-survivors.

“I would like to acknowledge the significant work of Jon Rouse APM and his team at the Victims’ Commission and look forward to deepening community engagement and continuing our shared focus on improving government and community responses to not only meet but also anticipate the needs of victims.”
