The former partner of Mt Tamborine murder victim Matthew Berry has urged the public to come forward following his “violent” death and has described him as an “incredible partner”.

“Matty was a loving father, son, brother and friend,” Edwina Berry said tearfully.

“His heart was huge, and he was always willing and able to put others before himself.

“My husband didn’t deserve any of this. I’m asking anyone with information to please come forward and help police with their investigation. I just want justice for all our family and friends, and most of all our two little girls.”

Detective Inspector Chris Knight also provided an update on the investigation, which is now entering its fourth day.

“We have made some progress but we have a way to go and we still continue to appeal for the public to come forward,” Knight said.

Police declined to comment further on Mr Berry’s injuries or what kind of weapon was involved in his death which has been described as “deeply confronting.”

“We have been able to get some answers along that (Mr Berry’s injuries), but to be quite honest I don’t think it is appropriate to discuss it. I said on Friday that the crime scene certainly indicates a high degree of violence but I just don’t want to elaborate beyond that,” Mr Knight said.

Detective Knight did confirm that police efforts were concentrated on looking for someone with a connection to Mr Berry.

“I am comfortable enough at this stage, we are probably looking for someone who had an association with Matthew, as to the nature of that association that remains to be seen.

Police did however refuse to comment on whether investigators were probing possible drug links given his previous criminal convictions.

The battered body of father-of-two Matthew Berry, 37, was discovered by his former partner, Edwina, in his parents’ Mt Tamborine home, where he lived alone, on Thursday afternoon. Police believe Mr Berry had been dead since Wednesday afternoon.

Mrs Berry went to check on him, concerned for his welfare when she hadn’t heard from him, and had to be treated for shock after witnessing the grisly scene.

Mr Berry had suffered what sources said were “traumatic” injuries, with police confirming clear “violence” had been inflicted.

The Courier-Mail reveal on Friday that he was sentenced to two-and-half years’ jail in Brisbane Supreme Court in 2016 after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing dangerous drugs at Emerald in Central Queensland.

He was also due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court next week on fresh charges of drug-driving and possessing dangerous drugs.

Investigations remain ongoing.
