Prison officers at a Brisbane jail have foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs inside, after they were found secreted under a truck making a delivery to the jail.

Intelligence officers at Wolston jail found Subutex strips, which is the drug Buprenorphine used for opioid addiction, as the truck was making a delivery to prison industries, an area where prisoners can work for small amounts of pay.

Prison authorities estimate the drugs seized on December 22 are worth $37,000. A Subutex strip cut into four pieces can sell for hundreds.

General manager of Wolston Correctional Centre Andrew Wilson said Queensland Corrective Services had a “zero-tolerance approach” to drugs being brought into jails.

“Correctional centres are controlled environments for a reason and introducing illicit substances endangers the safety of our officers, visitors and prisoners,” Mr Wilson said.

“This intercept is an example of our officers’ commitment and capability in protecting the safety of staff working on the frontline, the community, and prisoners.”

Queensland police are helping corrective services investigate the incident.
