Dad in court for supplying vapes to daughter’s 13yo friend

A Brisbane father who repeatedly supplied vapes to his 13-year-old daughter’s friend claims he was ‘just a stupid idiot’.

A married father who repeatedly supplied vapes to his 13-year-old daughter’s friend has apologised for his offending, telling a court “I was just a stupid idiot”.

The man faced the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to supplying a smoking product to a child.

The court heard the man, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of the child victim, had been repeatedly contacted by the girl asking for vapes over text message between October and December last year.

The police prosecutor said each time, the man had provided the teenager with a vape, even after telling her on one occasion “last one” indicating he wouldn’t supply her again.

The court heard on one occasion in December, the girl messaged the man asking her to bring him a vape to a local shopping centre and he did so.

In December, Child Protection officers began investigating allegations the man had supplied the child with smoking products, seizing phones belonging to the victim and defendant.

“On Tuesday 20 February (2024) the detectives attended the defendant’s residential address in relation to this matter and he was asked about supplying vapes to the juvenile and admitted to supplying the vapes,” the prosecutor said.

“He stated that he had supplied the vapes on four or five occasions at his house and at the shopping centre.

“He said he was aware the child was 13 and a friend of his daughter.”

Asked about the offending, the man told the court: “I was just a stupid idiot”.

The magistrate took into account the man’s early plea, lack of criminal history and previous good character.

He was fined $300 and no conviction was recorded.
