Man, 29, faces court charged with murder as 59-year-old man dies at Brisbane home

A 29-year-old man plans to fight the murder charge laid against him after his boss was found dead at a home in Cannon Hill. The deceased man has been identified as a 59-year-old Gold Coast father of two.

Lawyer says 'significant self defence issues' surround alleged murder

The man charged with the murder of Khalil Ibrahim has faced court this morning, with his lawyer stating ‘significant self-defence issues’ surrounded the matter.

Jordan Theodore Van Doorn was charged with murder in the early hours of Saturday morning after Mr Ibrahim, 59, was found dead at a Cannon Hill home on Friday.

His matter was briefly mentioned in Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning.

Van Doorn, who the court heard was employed by Mr Ibrahim, did not appear and an application for bail for a murder charge cannot be made before a Magistrate.

Outside court Van Doorn’s lawyer Nick Crawford said his client would be fighting the charge.

“The only thing I’ll say is there’s some significant self-defence issues with this matter and the allegation is that the deceased attended my client’s address,” Mr Crawford said.

Asked if his client would be fighting the charge Mr Crawford said: “absolutely”.

Earlier Mr Crawford told the court he had spoken to Van Doorn for about 30 minutes this morning.

Police senior prosecutor Peri Cardiff said Mr Ibrahim was an employer of Van Doorn’s.

Ms Cardiff said a full brief of evidence would be commenced but there would likely be delays due to the need to obtain coroners reports.

Mr Ibrahim’s body was found at a Cannon Hill address in Brisbane’s east about 2pm yesterday when police arrived to conduct a welfare check.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, 29-year-old Jordan Theodore Van Doorn was charged with murder after being apprehended by police a short time later in Carina.

Gold Coast father of two Mr Ibrahim is understood to own a concreting business and work across southeast Queensland.

Mr Van Doorn is understood to be a father of two and his partner pregnant with their third child.

A neighbour who preferred not to be named said she had never seen Mr Ibrahim or the white Ute, which is parked on the front yard, at the residence before.

“There are lots of cars coming and going from that house, but I’ve never seen that car. Jordy’s car also isn’t there which is unusual,” she said

The neighbour said she didn’t hear anything from the incident.

Mr Van Doorn’s brother is understood to live at the Cannon Hill address with him.

Marisol Rmrz Mabansag, who identified herself as Mr Ibrahim’s partner, took to social media last night to pay tribute to the man she had lived with for “almost six years”.

“Why did you leave me right away …” she wrote.

“Rest in paradise my love … I will always love you.”

Police found Mr Ibrahim unresponsive at the Aster St address.

Both police and paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene.

Police inspector Geoffrey Acreman confirmed the pair were known to each other.

“They are known to each other so it’s not a situation where the neighbours need to be concerned in this particular matter,” he said.

Insp Acreman would not disclose the type of injury the man suffered.

“Obviously the investigation is underway and there’s certain information that we will keep close to our chest,” he said.

A young woman from across the street said her and a group of friends only just moved into the neighbour “about two months ago”.

“It’s normally a really quiet street,” she said.

“I was sitting in the front room of the house but didn’t know anything was going on until I looked out the window.

“There were about four intensive care paramedics, a regular paramedic, four police cars, a police motorbike and an undercover police van.

“We are probably the youngest in the street followed by those guys.

“We haven’t had much interaction with the guys that live there but there’s only a couple of them and they wouldn’t be much older than 30.”
