A terrified neighbour has described the moment she saw a hooded man carrying a gun after a man was shot dead in the front yard of a home in Brisbane’s southwest overnight.
The incident happened on Cliveden Ave, across the road from Corinda State School at Corinda, about 3.25am on Tuesday.
Upon arrival police and paramedics commenced first aid, but the 38-year-old man died at the scene.
Early investigations suggest “up to four males and a female” had attended the property and assaulted a resident – the culmination of a week-long “dispute” – shortly before the shooting occurred.
On Tuesday afternoon, police released CCTV footage from the scene showing the moment a car, believed the be a 2016 Audi A3, and a group of people descended on the property from a nearby street.
The car is seen arriving in Thornburgh St, less than a block from the scene of the shooting, and turning around in a driveway before waiting at the side of the road, before it was then filmed driving back towards the scene of the shooting.
The footage also captured a group of two people crossing Stucol Street heading east along Cliveden Ave towards the home where the shooting occurred.
Police would like to speak to the people in the video.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said the man was shot in the chest “at very close range” with what police believe was a 12-gauge shotgun, in a situation that is believed to have unfolded within “30 or 40 seconds”.
“Our inquiries to date indicate that up to four males and one female have attended this residence at around 3.25am,” Supt Massingham said.
“At that time they have commenced assaulting a man who resides at this address.
“And it’s apparent at that time the male deceased was seated in his vehicle which is directly opposite the address … it’s a white Honda.
“Upon seeing that occur the deceased has left his vehicle, from what we know at this stage, and has confronted the persons in the front yard.
“At this stage we believe that the five were armed with at least two firearms, one being a shotgun and the other potentially a handgun.
“The neighbour has reported hearing two shots – I believe they were fired from potentially near the roadway and then there has been additional shots fired from within the front yard.”
Supt Massingham said the group had been dealing with a week-long dispute, but he wouldn’t elaborate on what it was about.
“They have known each other for some time,” he said.
Police were still investigating why the 38-year-old victim was there, but Supt Massingham said he did not believe the attack to be gang-related.
Police also do not believe the attack had any connection to multiple shootings that are the subject of Operation Dagobah.
Supt Massingham said he was deeply concerned about the public slaying in the wake of a high-profile stabbing at Mansfield last month where a young man was killed.
“These type of instances in public spaces concern me. We have a number for persons armed with significant weaponry, and it’s important we harness whatever is in the community,” he said.
Police were “desperately seeking” help from the public who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area this morning.
Regine Maroto, who lives next door to the property where a man was fatally shot early this morning, said she woke to the sound of two gun shots, after which she saw a hooded man on the street.
“I saw the guy, carrying a gun, walking towards the house,” Ms Maroto said.
She said her housemates called police and they hid so they didn’t see how he left the area.
Ms Maroto said she didn’t know her neighbour.
Neighbours say they heard what they thought was a roller door closing around the time of the shooting.
A crime scene has been established, with the drop-off zone off Corinda State School closed and the nearby Eden Academy childcare centre also affected.
Parents were being told to use the back gate to access the school.
Corinda State High School will remain open, but parents have been warned to allow extra time for the school drop-off as access via Cliveden Ave is closed.
Labor member for Mount Ommaney, Jess Pugh, has taken to social media to address the incident.
“Sad news this morning for our community, an investigation is underway and schools are open, but please do allow extra time to travel,” Ms Pugh wrote on social media.
