A Queensland magistrate’s son has been charged with over 100 sex offences against nine children including grooming, rape, and indecent filming.

Cooper Mitchell Bamberry, 22, was charged with 119 additional offences earlier this month after he was previously released on bail in March for nine child abuse charges.

The Helensvale resident is the son of Queensland magistrate Mark Bamberry.

A police spokesman confirmed Cooper Bamberry was originally arrested following a public appeal and the execution of a search warrant at a Helensvale residence on March 3.

Investigators seized several electronic devices at that time and charged Bamberry with offences against one child under the age of 16, including four counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16, two counts of engaging in penile intercourse with a child under 16 and one count each of grooming a child under 16, involving a child in making child exploitation material, and distributing child exploitation material.

Following further analysis of the seized material, police took Bamberry back into custody and charged him with an additional 119 offences involving nine children. It’s understood the case was moved to Brisbane because Magistrate Bamberry is based at Southport.

Bamberry’s new matters were briefly mentioned at Brisbane Magistrates Court on May 1, 2025. He made no application for bail and the matter was adjourned to May 8, 2025.

Bamberry’s new charges include 46 counts of indecent treatment of children under 16, 45 counts of using the internet to procure children under 16, six counts of carnal knowledge with or of children under 16, five counts of rape, four counts of grooming a child under 16, four counts of procuring a young person for carnal knowledge, two counts of involving a child in making child exploitation material, and one count each of threats to distribute intimate image/recording, stupefying in order to commit indictable offence, sexual assaults, and distributing child exploitation material.

Detective Inspector Paul Fletcher said the significant number of charges laid reflected the tireless work of detectives and specialist units working in close partnership.

“This outcome is the result of highly coordinated efforts between the Gold Coast CPIU, specialist investigators, and digital forensic experts.

“Our investigations do not stop once a person is charged. We will continue to follow every lead and piece of evidence to ensure the full extent of offending is uncovered and we seek justice for all victims.”
