Convicted killer Nelson Andre Patea will face trial after he was allegedly found in a car with a loaded handgun and $20,000 cash late last year.

The 27-year-old who was convicted of the manslaughter of Gold Coast pool builder Greg Dufty in 2015 briefly appeared via video link from the Woodford Correctional Centre in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

He is charged with possessing tainted property and the unlawful possession of a weapon while he was in the community on parole.

The matter is listed for a one-day trial with co-accused Mitchell Anthony Toki on April 28.

Toki stands charged with a range of additional offences including trafficking and possessing dangerous drugs and obstructing police.

The lawyers for both Patea and Toki did not appear at today’s mention, however Patea told the court he intended to plead not guilty at trial.

Police prosecutor Bimal Rout said up to four police officers were expected to give evidence at the upcoming trial.

Patea was arrested on November 29 in Brisbane City after the car he was driving was intercepted and searched by police.

He had been in the community on parole since January, 20 months after being sentenced to eight years’ jail in 2018 for manslaughter.

Police will allege they found a loaded Glock pistol and about $20,000 cash stashed in the back seat of a car pulled over on Ann St in Fortitude Valley.

They will further allege his co-accused Toki attempted to run from the scene and was taken into custody a short time later.

The matter is listed for another review in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on April 21.
