A police recruit seriously injured in a head-on crash while responding to a stabbing at Caboolture has graduated – defiantly declaring there was “never a doubt” it would stop her becoming an officer.

Cassidy Cleary, 23, was left seriously injured on March 12 after a man allegedly involved in a nearby stabbing collided with their police van as they raced to the scene of that serious attack.

After two weeks of recovery a sore Constable Cleary on Thursday spoke the oath of officer in front of friends and family at the Oxley Police Academy.

Constable Cleary, whose senior constable partner suffered “quite significant” leg, chest and arm injuries, declared she was “lucky” to escape the incident.

“To go through something like that where you’re not really expecting to as a recruit and then still be able to graduate at the end with my colleagues … I’m sore but I’m really grateful to be here,” she said.

“It will be a long process but I’m lucky to have walked away with the injuries that I do have and I’ll make a full recovery.”

The 23-year-old graduate declared there was “never a doubt” she would continue her policing career, knowing its risks.

“Going through the academy journey just cemented what I already knew was that this is what I am really passionate about, it’s really what I want to do,” she said

“You come in and you sort of have to have mindset, that is the job and we do put ourselves at risk to protect the community.

“I can’t wait to get back out there actually.”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk used the 50th anniversary graduation to reveal Police Minister Mark Ryan would begin consultation about moving the academy to Wacol.

“This is about setting up the future of training for the Queensland Police Service in new premises on land at Wacol where we have already built the Bob Atkinson Operational Capabilities Centre,” she said.

“Over the next three years, we will work out the best way to make the move, which facilities should go to Wacol and how to continue the highest quality training for recruits.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the move had been planned for some time.

“The Queensland Police Service welcomes the announcement about a move of the police academy from Oxley to Wacol,” she said.

“The QPS looks forward to working with the government to prepare a business case to progress the move as quickly as possible.”

The Oxley Police Academy on Thursday celebrated its 50th year of operation with a graduation of 122 recruits.

Since opening its doors in 1972 more than 30,000 police officers have graduated from the academy.

The $4m facility was built in 18 months and included a library, laboratories, pistol range, gym, pool and motel accommodation for up to 450 trainees.
