Cassandra May Daley pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm

A young mum who had “ongoing animosity” with another woman punched her in the eye after a night of drinking, a court has heard.

Cassandra May Daley, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm when she appeared before Maryborough District Court.

Punching another woman in the eye has landed a young mum before court.

The court heard there had been ongoing animosity between the two women, which spilt over into violence.

The women had been out drinking in Gayndah and were walking home when an argument between the two began.

Daley punched the woman in the eye then continued to assault her on the ground, with the two women “wrestling around” in the aftermath of the assault, the court heard.

The victim had suffered a grazed shoulder and two black eyes after the assault, the court was told.

The court heard Daley, who was a mum to one son, had been suffering from depression and anxiety.

Daley, who was one of eight siblings, had a strong employment history, the court was told, having worked in a packing shed and as a bar tender.

She was currently receiving job seeker and working casually, the court heard.

Judge Michael Byrne asked if Daley understood that alcohol would not help her mental health.

He said while initially she told police she had acted in self-defence, that was not made out in the facts presented to the court.

“Quite frankly, you behaved disgracefully,” he said.

Judge Byrne urged her to think of her son.

“Do you really want him to grow up thinking it’s all right to start getting violent with people?” he said.

Daley was sentenced to 15 months on probation and no conviction was recorded.
