Bulimba carjacking victim slams broken justice system after teenager released on bail

The victim of a terrifying carjacking has slammed the broken justice system after the first of two teenagers charged over the incident mocked police when released on bail.

The victim of a brazen daylight armed carjacking in Brisbane has revealed the “amount of anxiety” he felt watching the accused 17-year-old mocking police over his arrest.

Angelo Justus was reversing out of his Bulimba home about 2.20pm Sunday when two people approached his car wearing balaclavas and brandishing an axe and a shovel.

Police allege another car blocked the driveway while the others screamed profanities and demanded the keys.

A 17-year-old boy was charged over the incident Tuesday but it is claimed he went on social media to gloat after being released on bail less than 24 hours after his arrest.

Police will appeal the court’s decision.

An 18-year-old man from Redbank Plains was arrested at an Indooroopilly address on Thursday and also charged over the alleged armed carjacking.

The second teenager was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of armed robbery, enter dwelling and commit, attempted enter dwelling and commit, receiving tainted property, trespass, possess dangerous drug.

He was denied police bail and is scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.

Mr Justus said he was shocked watching the footage allegedly posted by the 17-year-old boy on Wednesday.

“We were slowly trying to get back to a normal life and the amount of anxiety it created last evening looking at the visuals just horrified me,” he said

“We were more upset yesterday than the day it happened.”

“We were hoping this was all over and police take over from here, but last night was shocking.”

Mr Justus said if the child had been involved then the behaviour was a slap in the face for victims and police.

“It’s a huge let-down. It makes me even more anxious about how this is going to all go. I think more people are going to suffer,” he said.

Mr Justus also said the system needed to change.

“Unfortunately the system is such that we are trying to protect the youth at the expense of law abiding citizens safety which is unreal,” he said.

“I’m not an expert in this subject but you don’t need to be an expert to see where the problem is.

“Police are doing the best, they were great on that day, but it’s clearly a broken justice system, if someone can get bail in a day.

“The community have got good awareness of what’s going on, where the awareness should be is from the law members and the elected members.”

He said the incident was an example of how much a break-in can impact someone’s life.

“A small intrusion into private life like getting into people’s house that violates people and leaves scars forever,” Mr Justus said.
