Bulimba break-ins: Armed intruders target Brisbane man’s home for fourth time

A Brisbane man who was threatened with an axe and a shovel in a horrifying carjacking incident in front of his home has revealed his frustration with tougher youth crime laws after being targeted for a fourth time in just two years.

A man who was threatened with an axe and a shovel in a horrifying carjacking incident in front of his home has been targeted for a fourth time in the span of two years – with footage capturing another armed incident.

In June 2023, Dr Angelo Justus was approached by two armed people wearing balaclavas as he was reversing out of his Bulimba driveway. They stole his Audi and were later arrested.

In December 2023 and September 2024 more would-be thieves attempted to break-in to his car before running away as soon as the loud alarm went off.

Overnight, Dr Justus was targeted a fourth time, with CCTV capturing three people in hoodies and one who looks to be armed with a long weapon.

Police were called to the incident at Bulimba about 2.30am and are now investigating the incident.

It comes amid a spate of attempted break-ins in the Bulimba, Morningside and Cannon Hill areas since June 27.

Since the first incident Dr Justus has ramped up security but said the latest incident was very scary for the whole family.

“It is frightening when you see someone carrying what looks like a knife,” he said.

“The camera picks up whatever he’s holding is long. That’s when I started worrying.

“We were all hopeful that with the change in laws, things may improve, but it’s frightening to see it’s still happening.

Dr Justus said it was concerning the latest incident was with armed people again.

“It is scary. What if they have managed to break through. It could turn really, really nasty, so that is definitely frightening,” he said.

“The first alarm chimed and woke our dogs and I head a couple of barks, and with all of them together, woke me up. I knew immediately what’s going on.

Dr Justus said he wanted people to know about the latest break-in so they were aware.

“So that people do watch out because it’s still happening with a similar frequency to what it is or it was previously,” he said.

Since June 27, there has been at least five attempted break-ins recorded in the Bulimba, Morningside and Cannon Hill areas.

“They’re doing it with impunity. What we’ve been seeing is there is an enormous amount of reporting in the last couple of weeks, the last three, four nights, there has been incidents reporting in our community,” he said.

“So I kind of knew that this was a matter of time again.”

While a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were charged over the first incident, investigations are still ongoing to find the other people.

Dr Justus said he believed that 10 different people were involved in all four separate incidents.

“Unfortunately, only two of them have been apprehended so far. So that is 80 per cent of the guys are on the loose,” he said.

“And if they are not being caught, the laws don’t do anything to them, right?

“So you can do all of the laws changes and everything, and unless it is applied to these criminals, nothing is going to change. I think they are just going to go on their ways and continue to do it.”
