Cosmetic doctor charged with rape and sexual assault remains in jail
A Brisbane GP and cosmetic doctor has been charged with rape, sexual assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
A Brisbane GP and cosmetic doctor facing charges of rape, sexual assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice is in jail on remand, and has withdrawn his application for bail in the Supreme Court.
Venkata Ramesh Nandamuri, who has been practising from Upper Kedron Medical Centre in Brisbane’s outer northwestern suburbs, was listed to apply for bail in Brisbane on Wednesday.
The 49-year-old from Everton Park is facing one count of rape, alleged to have occurred on August 20, and one count of sexual assaults alleged to have occurred on August 21.
He is also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice between October 18 and November 10 this year, and with three counts of breach of bail – one count between October 18 and November 10 this year, and two counts on November 9.
Solicitor Brendan Ryan from firm Mulcahy Ryan, appeared before Justice Graeme Crow on Wednesday where he told the court the bail application was withdrawn.
Mr Ryan did not give a reason why he withdrew, but told the court he had recently been appointed as Nandamuri’s lawyer.
The charges will return to Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 19.
On November 14 Dr Nandamuri was banned from treating women by the healthcare watchdog.
He focuses on skin cancer medicine and cosmetic procedures and has worked in various skin cancer clinics and emergency departments, his online profile states.
The Health Ombudsman has banned Dr Nandamuri from contact with female patients and states that he must take all reasonable steps to ensure women are told at the time of wanting to book an appointment with the practitioner that they cannot.
He must not provide this information to patients personally and instead must have a receptionist or other worker inform them.
He worked as a GP in Moore Park Beach north of Bundaberg until 2016, and also opened a cosmetic clinic in Brendale, in Brisbane’s north, offering anti-wrinkle treatments.
He was first registered in the profession in 2007, according to the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency website.
