A Brisbane man police allege is linked to the Comanchero bikie gang has appeared briefly in court accused of the murder of a man in Logan.

Samuel David Vernon, 31, appeared in Brisbane Arrest Court on Saturday morning after spending the night in the watch-house.

He was arrested by detectives on Friday over the alleged murder of Van Dam Nguyen, 52, this week.

Vernon has been charged with one count each of murder, grievous bodily harm, armed robbery and two counts each of torture and kidnapping.

Dressed in prison greens, he did not make a bail application, as defendants charged with murder are unable to apply for bail in the Magistrates Court.

Investigators allege Vernon is believed to be linked to Comanchero OMCG.

Detective Inspector Chris Knight said Mr Nguyen was among three men allegedly taken against their will at Rudyard St and allegedly tortured by a group of people – including Vernon – after a planned meet-up.

“At that location, they were taken against their will and under the threat of extreme violence,” Inspector Knight said.

“They were taken to another location and where they were subject to more violence over a number of hours, before being returned to their vehicle.”

Mr Nguyen was taken to hospital by his friends and the extent of his brain injuries were realised. One friend also suffered a broken leg, and the other suffered serious facial injuries.

Multiple agencies were involved in the investigation, including Taskforce Maxima – the state’s OMCG police unit.

“We certainly do accept and are alleging there is a degree of organisation that occurred,” Inspector Knight said.

“The people that they met at that location we believe was a co-ordinated effort to extort and rob.

“We don’t for one second think this was a random event that occurred. We believe they either knew them personally, or were introduced by a third party, but some of those facts were still being explored.”

Inspector Knight said the investigation was not over and a team of more than 30 officers were working to track down others involved.

“It’s large. Probably for the last five days at least, we have had a very concentrated cohort of detectives that I would conservatively estimate in the 30s,” he said.

“I’ve been a police officer for a long time, and any violence that results in a person’s death is absolutely deplorable, but the extent of the violence in this matter is even above those normal expectations … it is highly unusual.”

Inspector Knight sought urgent assistance to locate a silver 2008 Jaguar sedan and urged anyone who had information about the incident to come forward and speak with police.

Vernon was arrested at a residence in Griffin about 11am on Friday morning.

Police will allege the two men were known to each other.

Legal Aid duty lawyer Ann-Maree Russo told the court that Vernon was planning to retain lawyer Mitchell Cunningham of criminal law firm Hounsell Cunningham and she would contact Mr Cunningham to tell him the next court date.

Mr Cunningham was on holiday, Ms Russo told the court.

The Magistrate adjourned the case for two weeks to return on January 25, for an appearance via video-link.

Mr Nguyen’s wife Amy told 7News on Tuesday it was a nightmare for her.

“I feel exhausted, and I feel like I lost everything,” she said.

“I wish when I wake up, everything will be normal, (and) my husband is still here with me.”

Amy said she hoped police would arrest those who killed her husband.

Investigations are continuing.
