Convicted sex offender Gary Glitter has been ordered by a high court judge to pay compensation of almost six-figures to a victim for the damage she suffered as a result of his abuse.

Disgraced paedophile Gary Glitter has been ordered by a high court judge to pay half a million pounds - about a million Australian dollars - in compensation to a victim for the psychiatric damage she suffered as a result of his abuse.

The woman is suing Glitter - whose real name is Paul Gadd - following his 2015 conviction for abusing her and two other young victims between 1975 and 1980.

The woman’s lawyer had previously told the High Court that she was seeking damages for “profound and long-lasting consequences” for the abuse she endured when she was 12 years old.

Mrs Justice Tipples said in a 13-page ruling on Tuesday:  “There is no doubt that the claimant was subject to sexual abuse of the most serious kind by the defendant when she was only 12 years old and that has had a very significant adverse impact on the rest of her life.”

Mrs Tipples said the compensation includes £381,000 ($733,000) in lost earnings and £7,800 ($13,500) for future therapy and treatment.

Richard Scorer, the head of abuse law at Slater and Gordon who acts for the victim, said: “In making this award the court has properly acknowledged the appalling abuse suffered by my client. Whilst no amount of money can make up for horrific sexual abuse, the award at least goes some way to recognising the devastation inflicted on my client throughout her childhood and adult life.

“Gadd’s refusal to engage with the process merely proves his utter lack of remorse, something we will be reminding the Parole Board about if he makes another application for early release. We will be pursuing Gadd for payment and will continue to support our client through this process.”

A hearing is slated next Tuesday to consider interest accrued on the damages and legal costs.

It is understood the former singer, 80, may have to fork out more in compensation as the second hearing will consider legal fees and whether interest on the damages is due.

The convicted paedophile was released in February 2023 after serving half his sentence.

But he was back in prison weeks later after it was reported he tried to access the dark web and access images of children.

His abuse came to light when he became the first person arrested under Operation Yewtree - the investigation launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

His fall from grace happened years earlier after he admitted possessing around 4,000 child pornography images and was jailed for four months in 1999.
