A Sydney public school PE teacher and rugby coach stomped on the head of a man and repeatedly punched and kicked him while he was on the ground during a vicious and prolonged assault after a drunken night out with mates.

Jordan Fowles, a teacher at The Forest High School in Frenchs Forest, was on his way home from the pub on a Saturday night when he bashed the random stranger in the middle of the road at Warriewood.

Fowles, 33, of Narrabeen, who is also a well known former junior rugby union coach with private schools including St Augustine’s College at Brookvale, had attended a Warringah Rats rugby match earlier in the day on June 28.

Manly Local Court was told that Fowles, who played rugby and was a former coach at the Warringah club, then went to a licensed premises at Collaroy with friends before making his way home after having at least 10 drinks.

At about 9pm, Fowles stumbled onto the roadway from a footpath on Boondah Rd, Warriewood, forcing a car to swerve around him, according to a police facts sheet tendered to court.

A Hyundai van driven by the victim, following behind the car, pulled over and parked near Fowles.

The PE teacher said to the man: “What are you looking at c***?”.

As the victim backed away, Fowles punched him in the right eye, causing the man to fall.

The victim got to his feet and tried to flee, but Fowles followed him and punched him several more times in the face and head, causing him to fall again.

Fowles, who the court was told weighs 95kg and is 182cm tall, then grabbed the man’s jumper and dragged him back into the middle of Boondah Rd.

He then stomped on the man’s head with his left foot “before proceeding to punch the victim repeatedly while standing over the victim,” the facts sheet stated.

Another motorist, who stopped to help, heard the victim yelling for help and begging Fowles to stop “while curled into a protective ball”.

Witness tried to drag Fowles off the victim “but was unable to remove the accused due to his size”.

Fowles only walked away when another car entered Boondah Rd, allowing the victim to get to his van and drive away. Fowles punched the van as it left the scene, damaging a rear panel.

Police found Fowles several minutes later, walking towards his home. They noticed abrasions on his knuckles.

The victim suffered an injured shoulder, abrasions to his knee, as well as abrasions, bruising and swelling to his head and face. He was treated by ambulance paramedics.

Fowles told police that he had no recollection of the assault.

His solicitor who described the assault to the court as “appalling and disgraceful behaviour”, said his client admitted that he had “unhealthy” alcohol consumption.

In a letter of apology to his victim, Fowles wrote that his behaviour towards him was “completely uncalled for, inappropriate and excessive.”.

“It does not reflect the personal values and morals I hold as an educator, a father and a man.”

Fowles pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and damage property.

Magistrate Daniel Reiss convicted Fowles and handed him a 12-month suspended jail term, in the form of a supervised Intensive Corrections Order and ordered him to do 100 hours of community service.
