Kevin Steven Correll, the main person of interest in the killing of Rachelle Childs in 2001, is the brother of one Australia’s most reviled child rapists.
Raymond Barry Cornwall, now in his late 60s, has raped multiple women and girls.
He surprised his victims and often used a knife.
For a time, until his much-published arrest, his Sydney attacks prompted women to fear leaving home or using walking tracks.
One of his victims was a 13-year-old girl on her way to school.
He sexually assaulted two 14-year-old girls as they walked through the University of Western Sydney.
Over two years from 1991, he also attacked an 18-year-old woman and attempted to attack a 15-year-old girl armed with a knife.
DNA linked him to a 1999 rape in Pottsville, in northern NSW.
LISTEN TO EPISODES 1-5 OF THE PODCAST BELOW:
Cornwall confessed some of his disturbing crimes to Mr Correll, who relayed the information to police.
Cornwall has spent most of the past 35 years in jail.
Authorities have repeatedly asked for strict supervisory powers since his latest release from prison in 2022.
In 2007, Cornwall breached his bail conditions within 30 minutes of his release from jail, prompting a statewide manhunt, when he removed an electronic monitor from his ankle.
Three years earlier, police found footage of him masturbating in front of a woman on a train. They also found 112 child abuse images, including images of pre-pubescent children.
The brothers are two of 13 children who grew up in Bankstown.
Mr Correll has always denied any involvement in Rachelle’s death and there is no suggestion he was involved in his brother’s offending.
Raymond Cornwall repeatedly refused treatment for his predatory behaviours, arguing in 2003 that it was “too late”.
