Sydney man arrested in Bali over alleged drunken assault on hotel staff

A Sydney man is being held in a Kuta cell over the alleged drunken assault of three hotel staff in Bali.

Bali cracks down on “disrespectful tourists”

A Sydney man has been arrested in Bali accused of assaulting hotel security staff after a binge drinking session in Kuta.

Scott James Harrison, 40, has been detained in the Kuta police lock up without charge.

Police allege that Harrison attacked three security guards at the Town Square Hotel in Seminyak, where he was staying.

Police claim that Harrison arrived at the hotel in a taxi in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the three hotel security staff – Christofianus Abukun, Juplianus Hanu and Yeremias Hasu – attempted to help him enter the hotel.

Harrison is alleged to have become aggressive and assaulted the guards, delivering blows to their heads.

According to Harrison’s lawyer, Mr Daniar Tri Sasongko, Harrison had been drinking all afternoon and into the evening.

“Like many tourists in Bali, and especially for my client, he drank long into the afternoon until night. He drank too much. He does not remember anything. He only remembers when he came to the police station,” Mr Sasongko said.

The lawyer also reported that Harrison is “in good condition today.”

Security guard Yeremias Hasu said the Aussie went “berserk”.

“At first he got out of the taxi and went berserk and then went to the hotel bar,” he said.

“At the bar he ordered two drinks and he was still raging. We tried to calm him down and bring him to our room but he hit us instead.”

The security guard claims that Harrison’s wife encouraged them to make a police report.

“We had no intention of reporting to police, but his wife felt threatened,” he said.

Mr Hasu said that Harrison expelled his wife from their room at 2am.

The security team took Harrison – who is reported to have been drinking beer, tequila and Margherita cocktails – to Siloam hospital to treat their injuries.

“He went on another rampage and was finally given a sedative,” said Mr Hasu who told News Corp that Harrison choked him by the mouth and tore his shirt.

Harrison checked in to the Town Suites on October 26 and is due to leave the hotel on November 6.

The scourge of drunken aggression among Aussie tourists in Bali is becoming an epidemic on the holiday island and creating controversy among law enforcement in tourist hot spots such as Seminyak and Kuta.

Local lawyers are quick to reach ‘peace agreements’ between the alleged foreign perpetrators and the victims in a bid to have assault cases quickly resolved, bypassing the judicial system.

“He said he is sorry to the people in his hotel. He really cannot remember everything. We already have a peace agreement including paying the medical bills and everything. The victims have no problem or a case anymore with Scott Harrison,” Mr Songsoko said.

Mr Songsoko said that he does not know if police will pursue an assault case.

“You ask about the process technically with the police, I don’t have authority to say (how the case may progress),” Mr Sasongko said.
