The father of one of the teen fugitives suspected of murdering Australian tourist Lucas Fowler in Canada is fighting for access to a video police describe as his son’s “last will and testament”.
Lawyer Sarah Leamon says her client, Al Schmegelsky, father of Bryer Schmegelsky, wants to see the video to better understand his son’s last wishes, the CBC News reports.
“My client is simply seeking access to that video so that he can look at it and so he can get some emotional closure with respect to these circumstances,” Leamon said.
Bryer Schmegelsky, 19, along with Kam McLeod, 19, is suspected of shooting dead Australian tourist Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese on a Canadian highway rampage.
The teens recorded the video message on their mobile phones before taking their own lives in remote bushland in northern Manitoba.
In a letter to Sarah Leamon dated August 21, CBC reported, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the video “has to do with how Bryer wanted his body dealt with after death and that information was passed on to his mother, the next of kin.”
The letter also said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had not publicly discussed or acknowledged the video, but plan to do so “in the next couple of weeks.”

McLeod and Schmegelsky, from Vancouver Island, were found dead near Gillam, Manitoba, on August 7.
Two guns were found with the bodies and are undergoing forensic analysis to determine if they are the weapons used to shoot Mr Fowler, 23, from Sydney, and Ms Deese, 24, from North Carolina dead on the side of a British Columbia highway on July 15.
The couple’s Chevrolet van had broken down, leaving them stranded in an area with minimal mobile reception.
McLeod and Schmegelsky are also suspected of killing 64-year-old university botany lecturer Leonard Dyck four days later on another BC highway.
The teenagers drove Mr Dyck’s Toyota RAV4 3,000km east to Gillam, sparking a massive manhunt that eventually led to their bodies.
