A Victorian police officer is likely to be extradited from Queensland as he faces dozens of fresh rape and child abuse material charges.

Police arrested the 42-year-old, who works in Victoria Police’s Transit and Public Safety Command, in Townsville on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old officer was initially charged with one count of sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16 and three counts of accessing child abuse material in June.

But he has been slapped with an additional 78 charges following an internal investigation that the force’s Professional Standards Command undertook with Queensland Police.

The slew of fresh charges include two alleged rapes, 30 counts of producing child abuse material and 38 counts of possessing child abuse material.

Police say the charges relate to alleged offences the officer committed between August 2014 and as recently as May this year while he was off duty,

He fronted the Townsville Magistrates’ Court on Thursday afternoon where investigators sought to have him extradited back to Victoria.
