Central Coast drug runner Alex Green admits supplying 12kg of Gold Coast cocaine after running red light and crashing

A drug runner’s mad dash to score 12kg of cocaine on the Gold Coast ended when he sailed through a red light and crashed his rental car. But a second duffel bag has never been recovered.

A young man had scarcely been out of prison for more than two months when he rented a Toyota CH-R from Gosford Avis and drove it to the Gold Coast on November 1, last year.

But his drug running escapade came to an abrupt end when he sailed through a red light and crashed into another car about 4am two days later on November 3.

The hapless offender, Alex Green, 23, of Umina Beach, fled on foot with two duffle bags but left his wallet in the car containing his driver’s licence and a Mid North Coast Correctional Centre ID card in his name.

Green appeared at Wyong Local Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to supplying a large commercial quantity of cocaine, failing to stop and assist after a crash, possessing a small amount of meth and self-administering drugs.

An agreed set of facts states Green hired the car and drove it to the Gold Coast before returning the following day.

He was captured refuelling at a Bulahdelah service station at 2.10am on November 3.

Almost two hours later he was driving south east along Wyee Rd at Doyalson when he ran a red light at the intersection of the Pacific Highway.

Green was later seen retrieving a small plastic bag of meth in the holding cells at Wyong Police Station and swallowing the contents.

A 58-year-old man was driving north on the Pacific Highway and slammed on the brakes but couldn’t avoid T-boning Green’s sedan, sending it spinning out of control.

Green got out and tried to open the boot before eventually managing to grab two large duffle bags and started walking away.

Bystanders called out to him “Where are you going?” but Green legged it into the bush.

Green crawled through a hole in a wire fence before stashing one of the duffle bags, which he covered with branches.

Police arrived and started searching for Green before a witness approached and directed them to the duffel bag, which had 12 plastic bags inside containing a white powder.

The total weight was just under 12kg and five of the bags were tested and found to be at least 80 per cent pure cocaine.

“Police were unable to locate the second duffel bag,” the facts state.

Green meanwhile called a taxi to pick him up from Wyee, telling the driver he had run a red light and been in a crash.

He told the driver he had “f--ked up” and was going to “go to jail” given he had left his wallet in the car.

Police arrested him later that afternoon and he admitted to being the driver.

He was taken to Wyong Police Station where he was captured on CCTV in the cells retrieving a small resealable bag of meth from his underwear and swallowing the contents.

He was adjourned to face Gosford District Court on November 7 to fix a sentence date.
