A Sunshine Coast woman has shared her heartbreak after her beloved dachshund, Duff, was tragically killed in a dog attack last week. Tiffany Torrie’s mother was walking Duff and two other family dachshunds in Caloundra when a bull Arab dog broke free from its leash and fatally attacked the four-year-old pet.

The dachshund was killed instantly.

While all five dogs were on leads, the bull Arab reportedly managed to escape after the two groups had passed each other on the track. “The bull Arab just broke free and came running towards my mum and the dogs. The dog grabbed hold of Duff, and he was killed pretty much instantly,” Ms Torrie told Nine News.

“He was just the sweetest little boy. He was happy to do his own thing.”

The attack left the two other dachshunds terrified, with one of them running off and not being found for five hours.

The bull Arab was reportedly under the care of pet sitters, who are not being held responsible for the incident.

Nine News reported Sunshine Coast Council rangers were called to the scene and impounded the dog. However, any further action has been delayed until the owners, who are currently overseas, return to Australia.

A spokesperson from the Sunshine Coast Council said that the attack is still under investigation.

“The attacking dog was surrendered by the owners to Sunshine Coast Council. We are calling for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward,” a statement read.

In Queensland, dogs can be declared dangerous if they seriously attack another dog or person, or if there is a belief they pose a future threat.

Owners of dogs that kill or seriously injure someone now face fines of up to $108,000 and up to three years in jail.

Dangerous dogs are subject to strict regulations, including being muzzled in public, desexing, proper fencing, and higher registration fees.

In response to Duff’s tragic death, Ms Torrie has launched an online petition calling for stricter regulations to hold dog owners more accountable.

The petition has 337 signatures so far.

“Dog attacks are becoming an increasingly prevalent issue in our community, and it is putting the safety of our beloved pets and us as dog owners at risk. Last week my miniature dachshund Duff was attacked and killed by a Bull Arab on his morning walk which has devastated my family,” the petition reads.

“No party was at fault as all dogs were on a leash, however, the Bull Arab broke free from its dog walker’s grip upon passing my sausage dogs and grabbed my little boy. He had no chance against such a big dog.

“I in no way want to blame the other dog and paint a further bad picture for larger dog breeds, who cop an uncopious amount of unnecessary abuse due to their vicious stereotype, but at the same time this dog did violently kill mine and I want to ensure this never happens again.”
