Visitors to the island are reminded to keep themselves safe from dingoes while on the island by following a few small steps.

  • Always stay close (within arm’s reach) of children and young teenagers
  • Always walk in groups and carry a stick
  • Never feed dingoes
  • Camp in fenced areas where possible
  • Do not run. Running or jogging can trigger a negative dingo interaction
  • Lock up food stores and iceboxes (even on a boat)
  • Never store food or food containers in tents, and
  • Secure all rubbish, fish and bait.

The Queensland Government has invested an additional $2m in funding this financial year and an additional $3m annually to improving the safety of visitors on the island.

The incident comes just three days after a young girl was bitten after arriving at the barge.

The girl was rushed to the mainland for treatment suffering significant cuts and lacerations to her leg from the dingo.
