THERE is something disconcerting about the possibility of a zombie outbreak consuming our planet in the near future.

While The Walking Dead is the most notable exploration of how such a cataclysmic event would play out on Earth, video game Dead Rising 4 is promising to offer a fresh perspective.

Executive Producer Bryce Cochrane said this was the fourth iteration of the title, which first appeared on consoles more than a decade ago.

“We have been able to have success with the series because it plays on events shaping the modern world,” he told news.com.au.

“While we might not be talking about zombies, I think people can relate the idea different outbreaks spreading across globe, which leave us with a feeling a helplessness.

“Our concept might be a little more far-fetched, but I still think people want to explore the notion.”

Mr Cochrane said protagonist Frank West returns to the series, which has even more zombies.

“We have increased the amount of slow moving Walking Dead style zombies and also added faster moving zombies similar to those seen in 28 Days Later,” he said.

Wanting to make the game more challenging, the developers also created a new breed of zombie.

“We wanted to evolve the series with this new breed of highly-intelligent mutated zombies, which hunt in packs similar to the raptors in Jurassic Park,” he said.

In addition to changing up the types of enemies players face, Mr Cochrane said the game had been designed to let people explore how they want to play.

“People can either play serious or try to make it as realistic as possible or they can embrace the tongue-in-cheek style of our game to have some fun,” he said.

“In other words you can play it straight down the line or craft some serious weapons to kill zombies, while being dressed in a sombrero and turkey suit.”
