The Aussie emojis coming our way as Apple announces 70 new characters for World Emoji Day
ON World Emoji Day, Apple has announced more than 70 new emoji characters and symbols set to drop, and there are even a couple of nods to Australia.
APPLE has shown some love for Australia among its latest emoji offerings, including our beloved national icon.
To celebrate World Emoji Day, the global technology giant has said it will launch a kangaroo emoji among the more than 70 new characters which will be coming to iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac later this year.
Fruit lovers from Queensland will also be thrilled with news a mango has been added to the food section. Its addition follows a social media campaign #mangoemojiplease that was funded by Aussie growers during the 2016/17 season.
The Australian fruit industry perceives it as a win, with the mango recognised as the symbol of summer Down Under despite being significant in India.
The free update to iOS 12 will also bring a bevy of other people options, with red hair, grey hair, curly hair and bald emojis joining the already 2800 emojis on offer.
Fresh smiley faces will show more expression with a cold face, party face, pleading face and a face with hearts.
Joining the kangaroo in the animal area is the peacock, parrot and lobster, while lettuce, a cupcake and a moon cake will beef up the food section, with the birthday cake the most popular emoji among Aussies.
Several other characters across sports, symbols and more, will launch later this year, including a new superhero emoji, a softball, nazar amulet and infinity symbol.
It is estimated a whopping six billion emojis are sent everyday, with 900 million sent on Facebook’s Messenger app alone — and that’s just counting the emojis people send without any accompanying text.
According to Facebook Messenger, more than 700 million emojis are used in Facebook posts everyday.
Women will probably be the most excited about the new Apple update, with 88 per cent of women saying they send emojis compared to 78 per cent of men.
One in three Australians message senders say they add GIFS, videos and images to their messages every day, and that this helps them better express their emotions and makes them more creative.
Thousands of emoji are currently available on iOS, watchOS and macOS, including emotive smiley faces, gender-neutral characters, various clothing options, food types, animals, mythical creatures and more.
