‘Just not good enough’: Minister slams electronic giants over poor quality products

ELECTRONIC retailers, including Kogan and Samsung, have been slammed by consumers over the quality of some of products.

ELECTRONIC giants Kogan and Samsung have been slammed for providing consumers with “poor quality” and “defective” products.

The big-name retailers were exposed in the July NSW Fair Trading Complaints Register which was released today.

A total of nine electronic companies featured on the monthly list with Kogan and Samsung dominating at 42 and 33 complaints, respectively. Harvey Norman came in third at 31 complaints.

The majority of complaints reported by consumers centred around laptops, mobiles phones, cameras and drones, said NSW Fair Trading Minister Matt Kean.

“The complaints were mainly focused on poor quality products that weren’t up to scratch, and defective products that didn’t work properly. That’s just not good enough,” Mr Kean added.

Last month saw their positions switch with Samsung topping the list at nine complaints more than this month and Kogan in second with two additional complaints.

From February to May this year, online retailer Android Enjoyed topped the list with a total of 250 complaints — more than any other retailer. However, it escaped the list this month.

Other electronic retailers to make the July list included Apple, 17 complaints, JB Hi Fi, 14, The Good Guys, 14, LG Electronics, 12, eBay, 10 and Grays Online, 10.

“Consumers should always shop around for the best price, but a great deal can quickly become a nightmare if you’ve bought a dodgy product,” Mr Kean said.

Mr Kean urges consumers to use the complaints register to help make better informed decisions before spending big.

“And it also encourages companies to pull up their socks and do the right thing by their customers.”

Two Sydney travel agencies also appeared on the July Register, with city-based Goway Travel receiving 16 complaints, and Bankstown-based Monte Carlo Travel receiving 13 complaints. The complaints were largely related to people not getting refunds.

18 companies appeared on the July list, with a combined total of 314 complaints.
