Tsunami warnings triggered after 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocks Russia’s coast

Tsunami warnings were issued for parts of the US after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck eastern Russia on Friday.

Tsunami warnings have been lifted following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake off eastern Russia, triggering alerts for countries including the United States.

The quake struck 128 kilometres east of Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of just 10 kilometres on Friday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The local branch of Russia’s state geophysical service gave a lower estimated magnitude of 7.4. It reported at least nine aftershocks ranging from 4.6 to 5.8.

Authorities had warned of larger than normal waves, including three metres above standard tide levels, on coastlines within 1000 kilometres of the earthquake.

Videos posted on Russian social media showed furniture and light fixtures shaking in homes and another of a parked car rocking back and forth on a street.

Shocked residents also ran out of their houses.

“This morning is once again testing the resilience of Kamchatka residents,” the governor of the region, Vladimir Solodov, said on Telegram.

“There are currently no reports of damage. I ask everyone to remain calm … A tsunami warning has been issued for the east coast of the peninsula. The public is being alerted.”

A tsunami advisory for the Aleutian Islands and the Amchitka Pass in the northern Pacific Ocean in Alaska was also issued.

The advisory - which was cancelled two hours later - is to alert locals that small waves may impact their area.

The US National Weather Service stressed there is no “destructive Pacific-wide” tsunami threat to Hawaii “based on all available data”.

People, however, have been told to stay out of the water due to potential strong currents.

The Kamchatka Peninsula lies on a tectonic belt known as the Ring of Fire, which surrounds most of the Pacific Ocean, and is a hotspot for seismic activity.

In July, an 8.8-magnitude mega-quake off the region’s coast triggered a tsunami that swept part of a coastal village into the sea.
