Popular children’s entertainers The Wiggles have been drafted in to teach kids how to save water at home.

A massive spike in daily water use has prompted Sydney Water to team up with the skivvy-wearing clan, who have written a new song as part of an education campaign.

The jump in daily average consumption from 178 to 183 litres per person coincides with a noticeable decline in efforts by Sydneysiders to conserve water.

“Our water supply is not endless. Our climate and city are changing, and the population continues to grow,” water conservation programs manager Suhanti Thirunavukarasu said.

“So we need to start thinking differently about how we can safeguard our water supply for our children and the generations to come.

“It is important to start teaching children about the value of water early in their lives. Even small and simple changes can have a huge impact.”

Ms Thirunavukarasu said around three-quarters of the drinking water delivered to homes goes down the drain or is flushed down the toilet.

She also said less than half of Sydney Water’s customers were trying to take shorter showers, a six per cent drop since December 2023.

“If everyone had a four minute shower or less, greater Sydney could save 35,133 billion litres each year,” she said.

The new song, Water Saving Superheroes, features the full Wiggles cast and offers practical tips for kids and their families on how to cut down on water usage at home.

Red Wiggle Simon Pryce said: “The song is all about empowering children to be water saving superheroes, so teaching children from a young age the best way to use water and how to save water.

“Sydney water is one of our most precious resources and so this song is really important.

“The song is catchy, it has a great message and it empowers children. We need to educate them from a really young age.”
