Nation set to be hit with ongoing cold snap

Australians are shivering into winter, with temperatures dropping to as low as two degrees, as an ongoing cold snap rocks some of the country’s major cities.

Cold front begins to ease across Australia's east

The nation is set to experience an ongoing cold snap leading into the weekend with temperatures shivering down to a mere two degrees in some states.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Canberra will lead the charge, with the predicted minimum temperature of a frosty two degrees on Saturday morning.

In the south, Hobart will follow suit with an icy four degrees the same day.

Sydney is expected to plummet to a minimum of 10 degrees over the weekend, while up north, Queensland will be hit with an expected 10 degrees in parts of the state on Sunday.

The Bureau said the cold front will continue to spread through NSW and Victoria leading into next week – hitting Queensland by next Thursday.

The sunshine state is bracing for a “cloud band stretching across southern QLD” which will bring increasing showers and patchy rain on Friday afternoon.

“Queensland won’t have that same sense of polar cold as Victoria and NSW, but it will definitely be a shift and will be a more noticeable thing in the western part of the state,” the Bureau spokesperson said.

The three days of winter southeast Queensland has experienced so far this year have resulted in more than a four degree drop in average temperature for the region.

Australian ski resorts across the nation kicked off their winter season early following more than 30cm of snowfall on Tuesday.

The snow resorts are set to officially open up this Saturday, just shy of two weeks before their usual June 13 start date.
